INTERVIEWS
ALFONSO CUARON (1)
On
Version originale
I don't know which formats will be released. Definitely,
DVDs have the best resolution. Also, it's the only one that lets you see the
movie widescreen. Basically every movie is wider than the TV screen. In VHS,
you are not watching the entire screen. You are losing a lot of it.
I don't feel very comfortable making comments. I think directors aren't good
on making comments, we are not good speaking. In "Y tu mama también,"
for example, I liked the commentary because it was Diego and Gael, who were
more amusing.
I enjoyed working with Lenny Henry, who is the comedian who made the voice
for the shrunken head. Then when the interviews for the DVD started - these
things are boring for me - I decided to break the routine. Why don't we have
Lenny Henry doing the interviews? In the end, the interview was done by someone
else with the shrunken head doing a little.
Johnny Vaughan did the interviews and the voice of Lenny Henry was the shrunken
head. That's a lot more clear, above all, when they interview the boys. When
Johnny is speaking with the boys, the head suddenly interrupts and the boys
react to the head and such. I liked that Lenny Henry, who was the voice of
the head in the movie, also had a part on the DVD.
When you do a movie, you get very immersed. You work 24 hours a day with every
element in the movie. Then I gave some ideas, such as having the Shrunken
Head. But actually many of DVD makers just came and gave me things to approve.
I wasn't very involved in the creation of this DVD, simply because when you
do a movie you don't have time for both things. I was very involved in the
creation of the "Y tu mama también" DVD because I was assigned
that. Here I tried to give ideas, but anyway, there was a whole team that
developed it.
When you are in the process of editing a movie, it's like adapting the book
to the movie. Unfortunately, you can't include everything, then you have to
set your priorities because you aren't going to put everything from the book
into the movie. That's the same in the editing process. One of the victims
was Sir Cadogan, and that was very painful for me since he was one of my favorite
characters.
There was an entire scene in which Sirius Black broke into the boys' room.
But that scene didn't survive - every scene that was related to this one was
deleted. The problem was that all of them were Sir Cadogan's scenes. The DVD
has many scenes that weren't in the movie, and Sir Cadogan is in one of them.
When we film a movie we try to make a lot of magic. Our adviser in this aspect
was Paul Clip. He is truly a wizard who advises those big TV shows, plays,
and even advises other wizards.
Besides the visual effects and the sophistication of the movies, what we wanted
to do on people's screens is throw around bits of magic here and there. There's
a section for those who saw the movie and didn't realize that there was more
than meets the eye. And you can discover several other things.
I had a great team of special effects supervisors, and with such a big team,
I had great special effects companies. Dementors were made in California and
the rest was made in London.
Since the beginning, we decided that this movie would be a movie with "characters
with special effects" and not a movie of "special effects and characters."
We didn't try to use a lot of special effects. Instead of showing them, we
tried to hide them. Special effects were real since they were in the same
tone that the rest of the characters were.
The interview on the DVD was made just after J.K. Rowling had seen the movie
for the first time. She was excited and positive about it. As a matter of
a fact, she loved the movie. What I like about it is that in the interview
she shows enthusiasm about it - not just about the movie, but with its themes.
It is very probable that on the first day of classes in a normal school, it
would have a chorus. I talked to John Williams about that and he loved the
idea. Next, we had to choose what they were going to sing. Then, I suggested
that John Williams to use the lyrics from Double Trouble, which are part of
"MacBeth." He loved the idea. What excited me the most is that John
included elements from medieval music in Harry Potter's atmosphere. This was
fundamental, since the rest of the music evolved from that idea, and when
I listened to it for first time (sung by children), I loved it. It was a way
of connecting with music but also connecting to its lyrics - basically connecting
to Shakespeare's poems.
There are so many people working on the sets. If you see the final credits,
you will realize the number of people who worked on it. Inevitably, there
are always one or two birthdays daily. And in Harry Potter, birthdays are
taken seriously. On each birthday we sang "Happy Birthday" but also,
those who were Mexican sang "Las Manitas." I had my birthday, too
- it was almost at the end of the filming.
