Biographie :

Né le 10 décembre 1960, à Belfast, en l’Irlande du Nord, Kenneth Charles Branagh a pour parents William Branagh (né en 1930) et Frances Branagh (née également en 1930). Son frère, William Branagh Jr est né en 1955 et sa sœur, Joyce Branagh, est née en 1970. Il a grandit dans la pauvreté dans l’ombre d’une usine de tabac à Belfast. Durant son adolescence, il déménage à Londres, en Angleterre. Là, il se passionne pour le métier d’acteur et la réalisation, mais aussi pour Shakespeare. A 23 ans, il rejoint la Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), où il joue dans « Henry V » et « Romeo and Juliet ». Il fonde ensuite avec David Parfitt la Renaissance Theatre Company trouvant la RSC trop impersonnelle. A 29 ans, il dirige et joue dans le film « Henry V » (1989) avec sa future épouse Emma Thompson (qu’il épouse le 20 août 1989). Le film lui vaut une nomination comme meilleur acteur et meilleur directeur aux Oscars. A 30 ans, il publie son autobiographie. A 34 ans, il dirige et joue dans « Frankenstein », une adaptation à gros budget. Le succès moyen de ce film a quelques effets sur son mariage et en octobre 1995, Kenneth et Emma Thomson divorcent. En 1996, Keneth Branagh écrit, dirige et joue dans « Hamlet ». Il a ensuite joué dans d’autres films et séries TV. Jusqu’en 1999, il sort avec Helena Bonham Carter. La même année, une rumeur prétend qu’il sort avec l’actrice Alicia Silverstone, mais les deux acteurs démentent. Il vit aujourd’hui avec Lindslay Brunnock qu’il a épousé le 24 mai 2003.
