Biographie :

Né le 27 octobre 1939, à Weston-Super-Mare, à Somerset en Angleterre, John Cleese aurait du s’appeler Cheese. Mais son grand-père, John Edwin Cheese change son nom lorsqu’il s’engage dans l’armée en 1915. A l’école primaire, il se passionne pour le cricket et devient le capitaine de l’équipe scolaire. En 1960, il entre au Cambridge’s Downing College. C’est à ce moment qu’il commence à jouer et à écrire des petits sketchs humoristiques. Ainsi, il décide de se joindre au groupe The Footlights Club. En 1963, John Cleese apparaît dans un show à Cambridge intitulé « A clump of plinths » qui devient si populaire qu’il décide de le transformer en « Cambridge circus » et de le jouer à Londres avec Graham Chapman, un futur membre des Monthy Pythons. A la fin des années 1960, il est reconnu en tant qu’acteur et écrivain. Il travaille beaucoup pour des shows à la télévision britannique. En 1969, Cleese et Chapman, ainsi que trois diplômés der l’université d’Oxford prénommés Eric Idle, Terry Jones et Michael Palin, créent un show humoristique. Ils deviennent les Monthy Pythons. La BBC produit quarante-cinq épisodes d’une série qui va devenir culte en Angleterre et aux Etats-Unis : « Monthy Pythons flying circus ». Une autre série culte « Fawlty towers » a été crée par John Cleese et son épouse en 1971. En 1973, il a quelques problèmes de santé inexplicables. Il suit donc une thérapie psychologique de groupe en trois ans puis finit par guérir. Il se joint ensuite aux médecins pour écrire deux livres : « Families and how to survive them » et « Life and how to survive it ». Il est ensuite reconnu comme acteur comique des soirées mondaines britanniques. Au cinéma, il s’affirme dans « Monthy Python – sacre Graal », puis joue en 1979 dans « La vie de Brian ».
